It is not necessary to treat the water in the BoatBunker Mooring Station to prevent marine bio-fouling due to barnacles or mussels. Water treatment is only for esthetic purposes.
The terms “water clarifier” and “algaecide” are often used interchangeably. We use the term “water treatment” for both.
It is not necessary to treat the water in the BoatBunker Mooring Station . . . If you choose to treat the water, contact your local marinas and see if they have any recommendations. Some of the more popular methods for water treatment are discussed below. The descriptive information below is provided by the manufacturer and is not an endorsement by Boat Bunkers. These products are all readily available through the internet or retailers specializing in ponds and water treatments, including discount retailers. Cost of treating water in the Mooring Station for a year with most water treatment agents is under $100.
Water conditions such as temperature, salinity, oxygen and nutrient content, which govern water treatment agents vary greatly. Any use of products for water treatment must be validated by use. We have identified a sample of products which are claimed by their manufacturer to be bio-friendly.
Some of these prodcts are not regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency and may be used without restriction. In all cases, federal and local requirements, and manufacturers’ recommendations, must be followed.
Below is shown a sample of water treatment categories and the products which fall into the respective categories. The summaries are from the manufacturer.
Bacteria and Enzymes: This is a non-chemical approach which basically involves living organisms feeding off of the excess nutrients that would otherwise be available for plant growth. Typically they are a concentrated blend of naturally occurring bacteria and enzymes that rapidly biodegrade sludge, improve water quality, decrease suspended particulate matter and solids, and control odor if used correctly in the proper blend for the pond. Companies do not advertise these microbial additives as algaecides and EPA has not registered these products as algaecides. However, their manufacturers claim that their use leads to less algal growth in ponds and small water bodies. Many different products are available.
Bio-Safe One is highly effective in cesspools, drywells, and lagoons and is approved for all septic system applications.
NewTechBio algae control treatment with billions of bacteria that double in numbers ever 30 minutes to absorb and digest sludge and nutrients while eliminating fuel for slimy surface plants.
Organica Pond Clarifier is an all-natural, microbial based product highly effective for maintaining superior pond, lake and decorative fountain water quality. It contains absolutely no synthetic chemical ingredients.
BINDERS: It is not an algaecide or herbicide, but it binds phosphorus to starve the plants.
TRAC H2O Unlike traditional water treatment chemicals that clump solids together, TRAC H2O™ actually separates the solids, allowing the water molecule itself to absorb them.
OXIDIZERS: These are generally considered biodegradable and release active oxygen and carbon dioxide into the growing environment. This oxidation mode of action provides immediate control of algae and algae blooms.
GreenClean is made from environmentally safe, biodegradable components and is non-toxic to fish and other aquatic life. Works on contact to control algae (especially String Algae). NSF/ANSI Standard 60 Certified for Drinking Water Applications and EPA approved.
PEROXIDES: Granular based peroxides are super fast acting contact algaecides for string algae and have been EPA approved within the last few years. It is fast acting and bubbles as it oxidizes similar to medical grade hydrogen peroxide. The byproduct is oxygen and it is safe for fish at the recommended dosages. The remaining filaments and cellulose must be taken out of the water or it will settle back to the bottom of the pond. It is a bit more expensive than some of the other products, but it does not leave any harmful residues.
BioSafe Systems offer an alternative to algaecides that utilize either copper or synthetic chemicals as their active ingredients. GreenClean is a granular product that attacks planktonic and filamentous algae on contact. EPA registered.
Ultrasonic Sound Waves: A submersed transducer generates ultrasonic waves that shock the algae and kill the algae by tearing the gas vacuole which allows them to float. This type of product should not harm your fish. The problem with this approach is that the cost for the unit is high and the results are highly variable and marginally successful at best.
